In Mongolia from 1990s the leading causes of diseases and mortality were changed. This study was the first application for study the avoidable mortality in Mongolia and has been based on modified list of Tobias et al., Ellen Nolte and Martin McKee.

Study objective was to analyze mortality trend and to contribute to define of avoidable mortality causes as an index of health care quality.

Deaths caused by “avoidable” in Mongolia during the period 1996-2008 in different age groups according to the causes of mortality were analyzed. The register is based on the death certificates issued by doctors and reported every year for the Health statistics center of Mongolia. Data of causes of death covering the period 1996-2007 was analyzed for the country as a whole. From 1996 we have reporting diseases and deaths according to the International Classification of Diseases. The trends for total mortality and the proportion of deaths with avoidable causes were analyzed. A regression analysis with the year of deaths as independent variable and the death rate or proportion as dependent variable was used.

The mortality rate for all ages decreased during the period 1996-2007 for both sexes differently and highest death rates were caused by injury, ischemic heart diseases, pneumonia and cerebrovascular and hypertensive diseases. The trends of causes of deaths were different in age groups and per causes. Deaths from malignant neoplasms and injuries were increased significantly.

Learning Objectives:
analyze mortality trend and to contribute to define of avoidable mortality causes
