Historically, Healthy People objectives have been organized into structured, disease-oriented priority and focus areas. This ordering method entertained the already segregated silos of disease, which in some ways restricted them to their own exclusive areas. Presently, there are efforts to develop the next set of national objectives to better reflect the growing acknowledgement of social and structural factors that impact health outcomes. Reaching beyond traditional health boundaries to take a more inclusive slant by framing the nation's health initiatives using the determinants of health is not only necessary, but inherently critical. This process will also lead to a deeper understanding in effectively addressing the nation's leading health problems. The session will explore the basis for the novel utilization of the determinants of health as an organizing structure for Healthy People 2020. The impact of the determinants of health on the Healthy People 2020 development, adoption and implementation processes will also be delineated.
