Target 7c of Millennium Development Goal 7 is to reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. Recent reports indicate that the world is roughly on course to reach the water source portion of the target but not the sanitation component. Reaching other MDG's is also contingent upon achievement of MDG 7, further highlighting the importance of this single goal. During a six month funding search and analysis of various donor projects, water & sanitation development consultants documented the funding levels, types of projects supported, and geographic focus of major organizations working in the water and sanitation sector. Annual reports from top donors were analyzed over several years to assess trends in each of these areas. Findings inform the discussion of how resources are being allocated towards achieving MDG 7, identify mismatches in the availability of funding vs. need by geographic region, and hopefully influence government policies and donor commitment towards achieving each component of MDG 7.

Learning Objectives:
1. List the major organizations funding work aimed at achievement of MDG #7. 2. Describe the trends in funding of water and sanitation projects, over time, and by global region. 3. Discuss the types of efforts by donor agencies and foundations to increase access to water and sanitation.
