I. Purpose

The purpose of the study is to identify the risk factors associated with work related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and injuries among the housekeeping and cleaning staff in a health care facility and create an ergonomic training program to help reduce these injuries and illnesses among housekeeping staff and cleaners.

II. Specific Aims

1. Identify and describe the extent of work-related musculoskeletal problems and discomfort among cleaners and housekeeping workers in the health care settings.

2. Determine the risk factors associated with these problems.

3. Calculate the risk of musculoskeletal injuries based on exposure information obtained.

III. Methodology

Data analysis of 118 cases from the employee illness and injury detail report (2004-2008) of the housekeeping staff was conducted using SPSS version 16. Injury rates were calculated for each year using the number of injuries and the total number of hours worked. These rates were compared to injuries in the rest of the hospital.

IV. Results

Data analysis showed a high incidence of injuries due to musculoskeletal strain. 21 cases were due to musculoskeletal injuries. About 10 of musculoskeletal injuries were observed to be in employees who experienced strain due to lifting objects. Strain due to moving objects was observed in 5 employees. Contusions and abrasions due to slip/trips and falls were observed in 17 employees.

V.Conclusion

Work factors were found to be associated with an increase risk for musculoskeletal problems among the employees. These included awkward posture during lifting, repetitive motion while cleaning and lack of ergonomic training.

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify and describe the extent of work-related musculoskeletal problems and discomfort among cleaners and housekeeping workers in the health care settings. 2. Determine the risk factors associated with these problems. 3. Calculate the risk of musculoskeletal injuries based on exposure information obtained.
