Ann Converso, RN , United American Nurses, Silver Spring, MD
This presentation, drawing on experiences in the VA Healthcare system, will discuss the role HIT has played in the Veterans Health Administration and evaluate and analyze best practices drawn from that experience. VA nurses with the United American Nurses, AFL-CIO have long been involved in the development of health information technologies at the VA, from computerized patient record-keeping systems to addressing security issues that arise with the new technologies, and more. The insight gained from this experience will help to identify challenges seen in current proposals and assess how frontline practitioners could ideally be involved in HIT design and implementation.

Learning Objectives:
1. To discuss the experience of designing and implementing HIT in the VHA system. 2. To identify and assess best practices learned during the design and implementation of HIT in the VHA system from a union standpoint.
