213312 Public Health & Child Maltreatment: Why does CDC care?

This presentation will provide an overview of the involvement of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's in child maltreatment prevention. The public health approach to child maltreatment etiology and surveillance will be described and specific examples of work related to these areas will be discussed. Specifically, the presenter will describe the development of definitions of child maltreatment and data elements for use in public health surveillance. Use of, challenges to and limitations of these definitions will be discussed. Additional projects focusing on issues related to child maltreatment surveillance and the application of the CDC child maltreatment definitions will be discussed.
