3029.0 Epidemiology Education: The Many Faces of Epidemiology Training in Today's Dynamic and Global Public Health EnvironmentMonday, November 9, 2009: 8:30 AM

This interesting session will focus on epidemiology education. Presentations will include a discussion of the opportunities and challenges with epidemiology instruction in the virtual (online) environment, a high-level overview of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), and strategies for training epidemiologists in the developing world. One session will describe an initiative for incorporating epidemiology into the middle and high school curriculum.
Session Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) will be able to: 1. Identify the opportunities and challenges with epidemiology instruction in the online environment; 2. Discuss the EIS and the training exercises and core competencies utilized in this applied epidemiology program; 3. Describe strategies for teaching epidemiology in the Post-Soviet East; 4. Describe the Teach Epidemiology initiative for incorporating epidemiology into the curriculum for middle and high school students.
