This session will
* Present the results of two studies that explore the health of recreational waters and how different activities in those waters change the exposure and risk for individuals
* Outline the steps needed to develop a surveillance system for harmful algal blooms
* Describe an innovative program for restoring a wetland ecosystem using wastewater
* Describe an example of how the participation of an at-risk community, the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, is enhancing a sustainable restoration plan.
Session Objectives: 1) Describe the relationship between exposure, risk factors, and possible health effects from microbial pollution of recreational marine waters for bathers vs. non-bathers.
2) List key challenges encountered in seeking to develop a comprehensive harmful algal bloom surveillance system.
3) Describe two innovative programs to restore wetlands along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
