Community water fluoridation (CWF) is recognized as one of the major public health accomplishments of the 20th century for the prevention of dental caries. For over 60 years, the effectiveness and safety of CWF is documented through scientific study. This session will examine the current science and address beliefs and experiences associated with the adoption of CWF. Also, legal issues related to CWF efforts will be considered and its impact on policy making will be analyzed. Various communication approaches to support CWF will be presented. Successful strategies for funding municipal water fluoridation projects will be described.
Session Objectives: 1. Describe beliefs/experiences that lead Latino communities to distrust the safety of the municipal water supply and implications of these beliefs in oral health practice. 2. Identify major legal challenges of community water fluoridation. 3. Discuss hurdles that hinder fluoridation policies and successful strategies for funding municipal water fluoridation projects.
