The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) conducted an independent assessment of Healthy People (HP) to address evolving national public health priorities. ODPHP begin a two-phased approach to develop a new framework for HP 2020 that included cross-cutting public health priorities that integrate determinants of health, diseases and disorders; along with Health IT, Preparedness, and Prevention. Phase I focused on the framework including goals, mission, and vision along with a graphic conceptual model. Phase II is focused on the development of objectives, baselines, targets, and implementation strategies and scheduled for release in January 2010. This panel will describe the previous HP framework and how was used to promote oral health. The first presentation highlights the process ODPHP used to develop an implementation plan and the proposed strategies for users. HP users from state and local perspectives will describe the challenges of promoting and developing oral health programs. These presentations will explain how HP impacts these programs. The final presentation will focus on developing the HP 2020 initiative and how oral health can utilize this new framework to provide the oral health community with recommendations on making oral health a priority and its integration with general health.
Session Objectives: 1. Outline the national implementation plan for HP 2020. 2. Discuss how state and local Healthy People users will implement the HP 2020 framework and objectives. 3. Describe the potential impact of HP 2020 on the oral health community.
