CALL FOR ABSTRACTS — 138th APHA Annual Meeting (November 6-10, 2010)

Cancer Forum

Submission Deadline:

Submit Abstract

The Cancer Forum invites abstracts for oral presentations and posters describing original research and innovative intervention programs or policies that address topics including cancer epidemiology, prevention and early detection, clinical trials, health communications, and survivorship. Special consideration will be given to research pertaining to this year’s conference theme, “Social Justice: A Public Health Imperative.”

Potential topics include issues of social justice across the cancer prevention, control, and care continuum. These could include disparities in incidence, screening, treatment, and mortality; access to clinical trials; and interventions and policy to address cancer-related health inequities and working toward social justice.

Other topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Application of informatics to cancer epidemiology and control
  • Cancer control and health services in developing countries
  • Cancer epidemiology and application of biostatistical innovations to cancer epidemiology and control
  • Evaluation of cancer control intervention and policy initiatives
  • General Cancer Topic/Does Not Fit in Above Categories
  • Health equity models that have particular relevance to cancer outcomes
  • Implications of public policy for cancer control, health care access and quality, and resources for cancer survivors
  • Innovation in primary and secondary prevention, including basic and applied behavioral, communication, health education, environmental health, and health services research that advances these efforts
  • Innovative, evidence-based, or promising practices in participant recruitment into clinical research, particular for underserved and underrepresented populations
  • Social Justice/Health Disparities
  • Translation of research into practice and policy initiatives, especially those involving collaborations and/or partnerships between multiple stakeholders (e.g., researchers, community groups, practitioners, and health educators)
Abstracts are limited to 250 words or less. They will be evaluated based on their conceptual and methodological quality, innovation and novelty, and relevance to the cancer community. Referral to web pages or URLs may not be used for abstracts. For any and all inquiries about your abstract, always refer to the abstract number assigned to you by the on-line system.

Oral presentations at contributed sessions are generally 13-15 minutes in length. An additional 3-5 minutes will be available for discussion and questions from the audience. Presenters at poster sessions should display their work and be available to answer questions throughout the scheduled 60 minute poster session. Preferences for oral versus poster presentation will be considered, but the program committee will consider all abstracts for both oral and poster categories.

This forum encourages students and those who have never presented at an APHA annual meeting, especially minorities, to become "new presenters" in 2010. Be sure to indicate new presenter or student status when you submit your abstract on the web page.
