This session will report on lessons from 16 states in using a collaborative approach to enhance quality improvement capacity within local health departments. Findings will be based on case studies conducted as part of an evaluation of the Multi-State Learning Collaborative funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The findings have broad implications beyond the project in understanding how to accelerate learning and adoption of quality improvement tools and techniques to improve outcomes.

Case study methods and findings will be discussed, including national, state, and local-level implications for national accreditation. Observations will be categorized into three major areas: 1) planning a local health department mini-collaborative, 2) implementing a mini-collaborative, and 3) lessons learned. Factors that facilitate and hinder the collaborative process and the adoption of QI tools and practices will be discussed. The presentation will also detail ongoing case study efforts and how evaluation findings are being used to improve subsequent mini-collaboratives.
