The OSHA National Emphasis Program on Amputations (NEP-A) was established in 1997 and upgraded in 2002 and 2006, however its overall effectiveness has not been evaluated. The goal of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the OSHA NEP-A. We will present an evaluation scheme and preliminary results. The evaluation, to date, includes a review of the literature on work-related amputations and on OSHA effectiveness; interviews of Department of Labor personnel for insights into the establishment, implementation and perceived effectiveness of the NEP; a data analysis of work-related amputation injuries utilizing BLS, hospital discharge, and trauma registry data; a descriptive analysis of OSHA investigations. The results of these activities will be presented, with a schema for completing, summarizing, and disseminating the results of this evaluation.
