Observational studies on the association between heterosexual marriage, physical health, and psychological state show strong effects of marital status on a couples' overall health, benefits not found among those who merely cohabitate. Currently, there is a lack of research available which investigates the effects of same-sex marriage on psychological well-being and physical health. Investigations have shown that gays and lesbians are at increased risk for mental health problems, physical morbidity, and low scores on quality of life measures throughout their life course. It is hypothesized that marital status has a beneficial effect on the health and perceived quality of life of married lesbians, compared to lesbians without access to legal marriage. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of marriage on the mental health, physical health, and perceived quality of life (QOL) of lesbians in Massachusetts where gays and lesbians are permitted to wed compared to domestic partnered lesbians in Washington State, and lesbians without a legally recognized relationship status in Florida. A cross-sectional study design will be employed. Statistical data analyses using ANCOVA will be conducted to investigate differences among group means. From a social standpoint, marriage equality in the form of state marriage laws, and federal benefits and protections for lesbian couples and their families, will serve public health interests and promote positive social change. Positive social change will also be promoted by the reduction of stigma, discrimination, and oppression of sexual minorities. This timely research will shed light on whether married lesbians enjoy similar health and quality of life benefits afforded to? heterosexual couples, compared to lesbians without this socially, politically, and culturally affirmed relationship status.
