Monday, November 8, 2010 : 4:50 PM - 5:10 PM

John M. Balbus, MD, MPH , National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD
Climate Change is anticipated to have multiple impacts on health. Some regions, especially those with disadvantaged populations and populations more dependent on local ecosystems for sustenance, are more vulnerable to adverse health impacts than wealthier populations. Impacts on health are likely to occur not only through changes in climate and subsequent changes in weather and ecosystems, but also through changes in energy, transportation, and agriculture that will occur in response to changing climate and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The US Global Change Research Program (GCRP) and its member agencies have taken new steps to increase the effectiveness and overall productivity of Federal research and development activities in the area of climate change and human health. This presentation will discuss the current status of the new Interagency Group on Climate Change and Human Health and its relationships with other health-related activities of the GCRP, including the National Assessment. It will also present efforts within the National Institutes of Health to enhance the effectiveness of its climate change research portfolio.
