Abstract: This presentation will describe the development of a facilitated self-study training program based on the Council on Linkages: Core Competencies for Public Health Practitioners. The goal of the training program was to provide staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their job as cancer control professionals and represent the National Cancer Institute in addressing cancer as a public health problem. The core curriculum includes content on cancer as a public health problem, the basic principles of cancer, and major cancer sites with an emphasis on cancer screening and prevention. Because staff had varied educational backgrounds, content about the basic principles of public health, the public health system, evidence-based program planning, and heath education and communication also was included. The training program consists of 10 self-study modules plus a facilitator's guide and a participant's guide. Each module includes objectives, resources as well as learning activities that provide the participant with an opportunity to apply the concepts discussed. Potential ways in which to implement the training program and plans for its future dissemination will be discussed.
