217271 Engaging Public Health Nursing Students in Transdisciplinary Education to Address Human TraffickingMonday, November 8, 2010
: 10:50 AM - 11:10 AM
One core function of public health nursing is community organizing and coalition building. This presentation will describe how public health nursing students were engaged in transdisciplinary collaboration and community organizing using rapid community assessment (RCA) techniques to learn about human trafficking. Human trafficking also known as modern day slavery is an international health issue and should be of concern to all nurses. RCA is a process to quickly raise awareness and gather data about a significant current issue within a community. The RCA was completed in six weeks by public health nursing students working in collaboration with law students to rapidly contact and visit various community-based social, health, and legal service agencies to collect data and raise awareness about human trafficking. The results of the students' collaborative efforts in rapid community assessment, surveys, and implication for community-wide outreach and education will be discussed. Engaging students in issues of public health and human trafficking can meet multiple goals in public health nursing education.
