217506 Animal Cruelty Panel

Monday, November 8, 2010 : 3:00 PM - 3:15 PM

Diane Balkin, JD , Denver District Attorney, Denver, CO
Violence towards animals has long been recognized as an accurate predictor of future violent conduct. A significant number of notorious criminals have a documented history of deliberately harming animals. There is also a striking correlation between animal abuse and all forms of family violence. Those who witness or learn of cruelty towards an animal often feel victimized even though they were not the direct target. Additionally, violence experienced may lead to violence expressed. There is a growing awareness of this “link” of violence. A community has the potential of combating all forms of violence and improving public safety by recognizing animal cruelty, reporting animal cruelty, and evaluating and treating the offenders appropriately. Education, early intervention and collaboration are the key to a safer community.
