Martha Dewey Bergren, DNS RN NCSN FNASN FASHA , Director of Research, National Association of School Nurses, Silver Spring, MD
School nurses are equipped to bridge the multiple disciplines responsible for student health. Food allergy reactions are first observed by others in the school community, and therefore, tools and instruction must be developed for non health care personnel to promote early recognition of food allergy reactions and follow-through on established emergency plans. A needs assessment was performed to guide the development of tools for the school nurse to establish and manage a safe environment for the student with food allergies. The school nurse tools will be discussed as part of a broader multidisciplinary program for Food Allergies in school.
