In 2010, the Council on Linkages finalized the Public Health Core Competency Continuum. This includes Tier 1 (Entry level), Tier 2 (Mid career/management) and Tier 3 (Leadership) classifications. This now makes it easier to assess skills and create professional development plans as public health practitioners move through the continuum. A national committee of academics and practitioners, led by the National Public Health Training Center Network, was formed to create a competency to practice toolkit that includes self assessment tools, sample competency-based job descriptions and suggested core training at different competency levels. This session will describe the development of the competency continuum and explore the new tools for translating the competencies into practice.

Learning Areas:
Systems thinking models (conceptual and theoretical models), applications related to public health

Learning Objectives:
Describe the Core Competency Continuum. Differentiate the competency tiers. Describe the tools in the Competency to Practice Toolkit. Identify competency-based training resources.
