The Consumer Outcome Information Network (COIN) is a database designed by both clients and staff at the largest private Mental Health Provider in Southern California. A computerized data system providing real-time outcome information to users was pilot tested with 150 consumers. Using an Adelphi method, mixed groups of staff and client identified key areas of recovery that they wished to track as part of their services at the clinic (Brekke et al., 2009). Researchers matched these key areas with existing psychometrically tested scales and created a database that clients were able to use with the help of a data specialist in order to enter their data. Primary domains used as outcome measures evolved with input from consumers and consisted of core strengths, daily activities, relations with others, and wellness. The data was analyzed using a factor analysis in order to determine whether the items collected have an underlying structure that is appropriate for the given data. Factors that delineate further subcomponents can provide additional insight into the nature and dynamics of these multivariate constructs. Since the data was presented in real time, participants were also able to gauge their current mental health status. To examine how this element of empowerment through the real time assessment qualitative data was collected and analyzed to examine satisfaction with the computer assisted evaluation and how clients felt this data could be used.
