219429 Healthy People 2020 planning activities in state health departments: An evaluation of applying the Healthy People 2020 frameworkTuesday, November 9, 2010
In the fall of 2008, the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) contracted with John Snow, Inc. (JSI) to implement and evaluate the “Evaluating the National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Agenda for the Year 2020—Healthy People 2020—through State Action” project, hereinafter referred to as the “State Action” project. The purpose of the project is to provide technical and administrative support to evaluate the effectiveness of the Healthy People 2020 framework as it informs planning at the state, tribal government, and territorial level. The project funded planning and evaluation activities for these levels. The evaluation project involves four main components: 1) Conducting formative research to serve as the basis of the funding and evaluation activities for state and territorial health departments as well as tribal health entities; 2) Designing and implementing the evaluation; 3) Coordinating the proposal development, review, and funding process for awardees; and 4) Conducting evaluation activities via web- and tele-conferences. This session will describe the updated approach to Healthy People 2020, incorporating an ecological model and social determinants of health. The session will also describe some of the planning processes and expected products as a result of this project. Finally, the session will describe the research objectives and findings of the qualitative evaluation of the new approach to Healthy People 2020, the nation's public health plan.
