Issues: Comprehensive health education materials on the potential dangers of childhood lead exposure through children's products were not available for consumers. This project was tasked with developing content through market research with consumers and by soliciting experts and stakeholders across the country. A key issue was managing the flow of information and ideas among a large group spread across the country while adhering to a short timeline.

Description: Research with consumers guided the development of draft content and design. Key stakeholders were invited to provide input on the text using www.writeboard.com, a shared online editing platform. The platform allowed participants to edit, see each other's edits, make comments, and compare versions. Progressive versions refined accuracy, tone of voice and literacy levels. Layout and design ideas were shared using Office Live Workspaces (http://workspace.office.live.com), which also allowed participants to comment and view each other's feedback. Both tools were free and easy to use. Lessons Learned: Seeing and editing each other's ideas and work, participants gained a shared ownership in the collective product.

Recommendations: New technology tools made collaborating with a large group, tracking changes and sharing ideas in real time possible.
