This presentation will redefine the links between animal cruelty and domestic violence and other offenses. It will include a review of research indicating that one of the reasons that victims stay in an abusive relationship is fear that the abuser will harm family pets in retaliation for the victim's leaving. With this as a background, there will be an exploration of programs and activities that support victims of domestic violence in leaving their situation and seeking shelter, while offering protection to family pets.
