In response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Program Collaboration and Service Integration (PCSI) initiative, the Indiana State Department of Health Division of HIV/STD/Viral Hepatitis and TB Prevention and Control Program, Indiana State Department of Corrections, and Step-Up, Inc., an Indianapolis, Indiana based HIV prevention education community based organization, collaborated to provide integrated HIV, STD, viral hepatitis, and TB messages to incarcerated men 2 years prior to release. Over the 5 week course, participants were presented with combined messages regarding disease prevention, counseling and testing, and diagnosis in tandem with a skills building component focused on planning for and implementing healthy decision making, particularly around condom negotiation and the use of male and female condoms and accessing harm reduction materials following release. Post intervention participant evaluations noted increased knowledge of disease etiology and comfort in utilizing acquired skills. Program participants also noted a high likelihood of accessing HIV, STD, viral hepatitis, and TB service providers following release. The program demonstrates the success of integrated messaging and educational programming in incarcerated populations.
