The CDC is strongly committed to the promotion and support of breastfeeding in the United States. Key activities for CDC in 2010 include: 1) funding and technical assistance to state health departments, 2) coordination of the Call to Action To Support Breastfeeding, 3) development of the Healthy People 2020 objectives on breastfeeding, 4) completion of the second round of the CDC Survey on Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care including dissemination of individual facility benchmark reports, 4) support of state breastfeeding coalitions, through teleconferences, financial support, and sponsoring of the National State Breastfeeding Coalitions Conference in January 2010, 5) monitoring breastfeeding rates through the National Immunization Survey, the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System, and the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, 6) publication of the annual State Breastfeeding Report Card, 7) development of recommendations on maternity care practices, 8) revision of the 2005 CDC Guide to Breastfeeding Interventions, 9) developing and implementing an agenda to address low breastfeeding rates among non-Hispanic black mothers, and 10) ongoing research on the linkage between breastfeeding and childhood obesity. CDC also reviews evidence and makes recommendations related to breastfeeding in specific contexts, including international travel, contraceptives, and potential contraindications to breastfeeding, such as maternal HIV or H1N1 infection.
