Using open source software development methodologies levels the playing field between public health departments by enabling the public health community to come together to collaboratively develop sets of shared capabilities. The CDC has demonstrated how this process can work through its Public Health Grid Initiative which involved the collaboration of different public health organizations to create a common set of data analysis capabilities.
