: 8:30 AM - 8:32 AM
The theme of the 2010 APHA convention is "Social Justice: A Public Health Imperative." The mission of public health—improving the health of populations – focuses on creating conditions in which people can be healthy and is fundamentally about social change.
This ICEHS session will explore how injury prevention does, or does not, incorporate principles of social justice. The panel will open with an overview of public health's roots in social justice. The next three panelists will address injury patterns in specific demographic groups: poverty and health disparities for American Indians and Alaska Natives with a particular focus on injury, changes in Black-White health disparities in the past 15 years, and the gender paradox in injury in which, unlike ethnic group disparities, the structurally advantaged group, men, has higher injury rates. In sum, the panel will use a social justice frame to examine long-standing disparities in injury among specific demographic groups.
