Monday, November 8, 2010 : 2:50 PM - 3:10 PM

Cheryl Baldwin , Science and Standards, Green Seal, Washington, DC
Green cleaning products have been increasing in use due to the interest in using products that are safer alternatives for both people and the environment. Increasingly purchasers are looking to third-party certification programs to help in identifying such alternatives. But how are these standards developed and does a sustainability standard provide the anticipated benefit?

This presentation will take a closer look at how consensus-based standards are developed to help identify more sustainable products. This includes now stakeholder input and latest scientific findings are incorporated into such standards. In addition, the effectiveness of such programs will be discussed by highlighting research on this topic including life cycle and field research. The leading standard and certification programs for green cleaning products will be used as examples for this presentation.
