California has been a leader in implementing policies to improve environments to promote healthy eating and active living. In preparation for submission of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant applications, the Secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency convened stakeholders to assess how best to build on prior efforts, and to recommend a small set of overarching strategies that all ARRA applicants would incorporate. These strategies subsequently formed the basis for local and state ARRA applications, and are reflected in policy initiatives sponsored by Governor Schwarzenegger. These priorities included (1) Promoting consumption of healthy beverages and decreasing the consumption of unhealthy beverages (2) Increasing access to safe physical activity environments and (3) Health in All Policies. In this presentation, we will review the stakeholder process, and the ensuing policy initiatives.
