Social justice is the application of the concept of justice on a social scale. The term has been documented in American philosophical theses since the 1800s. It is a pillar of theological principle in many religions. The concept of social justice has been described as being essential in any movement towards a socially just world. In this context, social justice is based on the concepts of human rights and egalitarianism. It is based on the idea of a just society, which gives individuals and groups fair treatment and a just share of the benefits of society. However, there are some who support the concepts of social justice but believe that it is best achieved through the operation of a free market, and the promotion of philanthropy and charity. Questions to be addressed in this session: Is there a direct relationship between poverty and oral health and general health outcomes? In what ways are disparities in oral health and health linked to disparities in wealth? What are the oral health effects of issues of social justice when viewed at the community level? Are issues of health equity and social justice inseparable? For oral health advocates, what solutions and methods of deliberate action are available to address these matters? If solutions are sought, who or what entity would provide leadership for such endeavors?
