In the NIDA Clinical Trials Network Safe Sex for Men protocol (CTN0018), we found that the intervention, “Real Men Are Safe,” was effective at reducing the number of unprotected sexual occasions for men in SA treatment compared to a HIV education control intervention. Subsequent analysis indicated the intervention was less effective with African American compared to white participants. Utilizing a modified Delphi Process ratings and recommendations from an independent expert panel were obtained. Real Men Are Safe was then subsequently revised to be more culturally tailored to African American and Hispanic men. The race data for CTN0018 will be presented, and the revision process which includes cultural sensitivity ratings and expert panel member recommendations for change will be described. The specific ways in which Real Men Are Safe modules were changed in response to the Delphi process will be presented. In a second phase of the study, the revised intervention will be pilot tested in 4 community treatment programs with either high concentrations of African Americans or Hispanic men.
