Jon Stemmle, MS , Health Communication Research Center, University of Missouri School of Journalism, Columbia, MO
The Health Communication Research Center (HCRC) at the University of Missouri School of Journalism is a leader in the field of tailored health communication. Building on its work in this field, the HCRC in 2008 embarked on an effort with Health Literacy Missouri to improve the health literacy of all Missourians. To this end, the HCRC is using behavior change and agenda setting theories and framing approaches to guide its media intervention targeting local media, especially in rural, underserved communities. This research project provides local media with ready-to-use tailored health stories, written in plain language. In this panel, the HCRC will provide insight into working with the media, both traditional and social, and analyze which communication elements are most effective.
