Sunday, November 7, 2010 : 4:00 PM - 4:20 PM

Ellen R. Shaffer, PhD MPH , Center for Policy Analysis, San Francisco, CA
Public health organizations and advocates played active roles in promoting and supporting proposals to expand coverage for health care in 2009 and 2010, a central matter of social justice. The national debate on the issue polarized the public and served as a lightning rod for competing policy agendas at a time of ecoonomic instabillity. This presentation analyzes the contentious nature of the debate, the outcome, and the role of traditional and non-traditional organizations as galvanizing forces.
