Using both Kuhn's concept of paradigm shift, this presentation will look at how theoretical frameworks in nursing have been used to frame research questions for public health nursing practice. While some theoretical frameworks have incorporated concepts key to population health foci from their inception, others have been adopted and modified by public health nursing researchers. The PHN intervention wheel may be regarded as a transtheoretical model for classifying activities and goals of practice in public health. A review of nursing research published in Public Health Nursing, the American Journal of Public Health, Advances in Nursing Science, and Nursing Research, which was discussed at the 2009 Annual APHA meeting in Philadelphia, suggests that this model has not been widely used to frame research.
