Over the past decade, demand for professional public health nursing has intensified. At the same time, pressures on public health, such as aging, growing chronic disease, health disparities and threats of natural disaster in high-density areas, demand greater versatility. Cost-benefit analyses suggest public health nursing interventions are efficient, effective, and could be widely successful in addressing more health problems. However, the nursing shortage and aging public health nursing workforce threaten capacity to respond to increased demand. Thus, practice research must be accompanied by workforce development research to identify better ways of recruiting, educating, retaining, developing, and utilizing workforce resources. Moreover, the 21st century will demand more interdisciplinary approaches to both practice and research.
