4066.0 Progressive pedagogy for public health: teaching and the co-optation of social justice

Tuesday, November 9, 2010: 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Oral
Panelists in this session will emphasize a critical approach to teaching “social justice and public health.” As we begin to see the “mainstreaming” of work regarding the “social determinants of health” and “social justice and public health” we are also seeing a dilution of the politics involved. A core concern pertains to how, with “mainstreaming,” comes the possibility, if not likelihood, of cooptation. Thus, although it certainly is better to start to have teaching on the “social determinants of health” move into the mainstream (and potentially encounter backlash) rather than be ignored, we need to think critically about the impact of “mainstreaming” on the ideas, work, and efforts to rectify health inequities. This session will examine issues of social justice and public health in relation to both course content and pedagogical approaches, including both resistance to and cooptation by efforts to minimize the political issues at stake.
Session Objectives: Participants who attend this session will be able to: 1) Describe a critical approach to teaching "social justice and public health" 2) Discuss issues of social justice and public health in relation to course content 3) Discuss issues of social justice and public health in relation to pedagogical approaches
