The Disability Section of the American Public Health Association is seeking abstracts on a wide range of topics related to the health, participation, well-being, and independence of people with disabilities, for presentation at the APHA annual meeting to be held in Washington, DC, on October 29-November 2, 2011. This year we will continue to expand the focus of presentations to include new topic areas, reflecting a broader view of the relationship between public health and disability. Topics of particular interest to the Disability Section include, but are not limited to:
  • Access to healthcare among people with disabilities
  • Assistive, information, and telecommunication technologies
  • Conceptualizing, defining, and measuring disability
  • Disability data collection and surveillance
  • Disability, poverty, and employment
  • Disability-related health disparities
  • Health & wellness promotion for people with disabilities
  • Health coverage issues for people with disabilities
  • Mental health and disability
  • Personal assistance, caregiving, and long-term care
  • Rehabilitation outcomes and measurement issues
  • Social participation, environment, and disability
  • The intersection of disability research, advocacy & public policy
  • Veterans, war, and disability
  • Other important or emerging issues in disability & public health
Abstracts must be submitted by February 8 (Tue) and are limited to 250 words. Please contact Program Planner by email (kiyoshiy@uic.edu) if you have questions about topic areas.

Abstract review and presentation type
Abstracts are reviewed anonymously and rated according to the following criteria: (1) important issue or problem addressed, (2) innovative approach or perspective, (3) sound methods or arguments, (4) substantive findings or recommendations, and (5) compelling to a broad audience. Those whose abstracts are accepted for presentation will be asked either to give 15-minute oral presentations or to present their work in an hour-long poster session. Research in the development stages, small-scale studies, and descriptions of projects without a significant research focus are best suited to poster presentations. Submissions from students are encouraged, and students should indicate their status when submitting their abstracts.

Presentation requirements
All presenters must be members of APHA and must register for the annual meeting. Presentations are expected to be as accessible as possible to all participants and to adhere to Disability Section guidelines for accessibility.

Continuing Education Credit
APHA values the ability to provide continuing education credit to physicians, nurses, health educators and those certified in public health at its annual meeting. Please complete all required information when submitting an abstract so members can claim credit for attending your session. These credits are necessary for members to keep their licenses and credentials. For a session to be eligible for Continuing Education Credit, each presenter must provide:
1) an abstract free of trade and/or commercial product names.
2) At least one measurable objective (DO NOT USE understand or to learn as objectives. They are not measurable).
