CALL FOR ABSTRACTS — 139th APHA Annual Meeting

Theme: Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds & Bodies

LGBT Caucus of Public Health Professionals

Submission Deadline: Friday, February 18, 2011


The LGBT Caucus of Public Health Professionals is soliciting abstracts for presentation in its scientific sessions at the 139th Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association in Washington, DC, October 29 - November 2, 2011. Topics should focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender health research and/or the conference theme, “Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds and Bodies,” such as but not limited to:
  • Alcohol, Smoking, and Illicit Drug Use in LGBT Communities
  • Gay and Bisexual Men's Health
  • Gender Identity & Transgender Health
  • Internet-Based LGBT Research
  • Intimate Partner Victimization
  • LGBT Health Policy and Advocacy
  • Lesbian and Bisexual Women’s Health
  • Mental Health and Quality of Life Among LGBT Communities
  • Research on Aging Among LGBT Populations
  • Research on Cultural and Linguistic Minority LGBT Individuals
  • Research on LGBT Youth
  • Special Topics
Scientific session formats include:
1) Oral presentation (individual)
2) Panel presentation (No more than 5 speakers on a specific topic; following the APHA website guidelines, the coordinator must submit an abstract for the session as a whole with each speaker submitting an individual abstract for his/her presentation.)
3) Poster presentation (individual)
Please indicate format preference (if any) when the abstract is submitted. All abstracts submitted to the Caucus undergo blinded, peer review. Reviews will not be forwarded to abstract authors.

Walter J. Lear Outstanding Student Research Award
The Caucus strongly encourages student participation and has established the Walter J. Lear Outstanding Student Research Award to recognize exceptional work by students on LGBT-related issues. The award consists of a financial stipend to offset expenses to attend the Annual Meeting and a free Caucus membership for one year. Students are invited to submit abstracts at all levels of presentation (oral or poster). Please indicate student status when submitting the abstract to be considered for the award.

Continuing Education Credit
APHA values the ability to provide continuing education credit to physicians, nurses, health educators and those certified in public health at its annual meeting. Please complete all required information when submitting an abstract so members can claim credit for attending your session. These credits are necessary for members to keep their licenses and credentials.

For a session to be eligible for Continuing Education Credit, each presenter must provide:

1) an abstract free of trade and/or commercial product names

2) at least one MEASURABLE objective (DO NOT USE understand or to learn as objectives, they are not measureable).

Examples of Acceptable Measurable Action Words:
Explain, Demonstrate, Analyze, Formulate, Discuss, Compare, Differentiate, Describe, Name, Assess, Evaluate, Identify, Design, Define or List.

3) A signed Conflict of Interest (Disclosure) form with a relevant Qualification Statement. See an example of an acceptable Qualification Statement on the online Disclosure form.
