Introduction: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the one of the leading cases of disability among men in the world. More than half of cardiovascular diseases were contributed to the IHD and 37% of death is caused by this disease in developing countries. In addition, IHD is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases in Mongolia. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of the IHD among elderly population in urban and rural areas of Mongolia. Methods: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional survey between March-September, 2009. Multistage random cluster sampling was used to select study population from capital-Ulaanbaatar and central, southern, west and eastern regions. Rose questionnaire (WHO) and Electrocardiographic investigation were used to define IHD. Results: Among a total of 2280 participants, 369 (16.2%) had IHD. The prevalence of IHD was significantly increased by age. Prevalence of IHD was 9.9% among 40-44 years of age, 16.6% in 45-49 years, 17.6% in 50-54 years, 19.1% in 55-59 years and 16.4% among people aged 60 years and above. According to the regions, prevalence of IHD was 14%, 20.9%, 14.1% and 15.1% in western, eastern, central regions and in Ulaanbaatar, respectively. Also, IHD was more likely to be observed among those who smoke and who have high blood pressure. Conclusion: In conclusion, prevalence of IHD among people aged over 40 years is high (16.2%). There were no significant differences on the prevalence of IHD by residence and sex, that was increased by age.
