The purpose of this presentation is to provide a foundation for interdisciplinary collaboration among public health and community planning/design professionals professionals. This presentation will focus on the role of planning and design at the community, neighborhood, and organization levels in improving public health and promoting healthy lifestyles. Using an integrated framework for addressing public health in community planning and implementation, an overview will be provided of comprehensive and neighborhood plans, zoning ordinances and development standards; emphasis will be placed on healthy design. Drawing on a number of case studies such as the Atlanta, GA Greenspace Plan, the Austin, TX Comprehensive Plan, and the Lancaster County, PA Comprehensive Plan (winner of EPA's 2009 Overall Excellence in Smart Growth Award), a compelling foundation will be provided for using green infrastructure as an organizing concept and direction for improving community health.
