Neighborhood Master Planning for Community Health
This presentation will address the need to create places that promote healthy lifestyles and are economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable. It will cover participatory design to promote healthier lifestyles in distressed communities, along with design principles for creating walkable communities at the neighborhood level. Complementing this presentation will be the importance of working with public health professionals that link design with behavioral programs for healthy lifestyles. Design that improves the built environment, when coupled with behavior change strategies through social marketing and healthy lifestyle program development, are together a strategy for measureable health improvement. Case studies will include the redevelopment or retro-fitting of several neighborhood projects, including the B.W. Cooper Public Housing community in New Orleans, LA, a HOPE VI redevelopment project in Kingsport, Tennessee, and a Senior Housing Redevelopment in Waverly, Ohio
