Joy P. Nanda, D.Sc., M.S., M.H.S., M.B.A. is the primary instructor of the proposed APHA-LI. Dr. Nanda is an MCH trained community and behavioral epidemiologist with extensive research and teaching experience on methods, interpretation and application of epidemiological issues. He has more than 35 data-based publications in peer reviewed journals and has produced numerous technical reports for epidemiologic investigations and program evaluations.
Qualifications and experience
He received his two masters and the doctorate degrees from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School, and has been at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions as an Epidemiologist/Biostatistician for more than 25 years.
Professional experience
a. Research
Dr. Nanda has been a co-investigator/methodologist in at least 100 local, regional, national and international epidemiologic investigations. He currently serves as an evaluator for the Maryland WIC Program’s statewide breastfeeding peer counseling services and as the Biostatistician/Epidemiologist for the NIH sponsored Douching prevention Clinical Trial (NIAID) and a Contingency Management Clinical Trial for Abstinence of Drug Dependency (NIDA). In collaboration with University of Illinois at Chicago, Dr. Nanda also serves as the Biostatistician/Epidemiologist for two DHHS (BARDA) sponsored phase I/II clinical trials on irradiated parathyroid hormone effects on metabolic biomarkers.
b. Teaching
In addition to his research at Hopkins, Dr. Nanda had earlier taught courses on epidemiologic concepts and principles at University of Baltimore, Delmarva Foundation for Medical Care, and at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. As an adjunct faculty, he has taught formal courses on principles of epidemiology, epidemiologic methods, social epidemiology, MCH epidemiology, Demography and Family Health, and Advanced Epidemiologic Methods at Baltimore's Morgan State University - a designated urban, community focused, public health teaching institution. Dr, Nanda has mentored over 45 doctoral, post-doctoral and other many graduate and under-graduate students focusing on methodologies, evaluation
c. Community service
In addition to serving on review and editorial boards on several professional public health journals, Dr. Nanda serves as Associate Editor to the International Journal: “Progress in Community Health Partnerships”, his role being to evaluate and apply epidemiologic principles to CBPR methodologies for community residents. For the past two years Dr. Nanda has served as a mentor to faculty at Baltimore’s Coppin State University’s Faculty Writing Institute. He also served as a facilitator for the DHHS sponsored National Healthcare Preparedness Evaluation and Improvement Conference, in 2009.
Dr. Nanda has also successfully taught this APHA-LI (formerly CEI) during 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010 and has received excellent feedback from participants throughout the years.
Other faculty associates are being identified based on individuals with adequate credentials who will have registered for the 139th APHA conference as well as have shown a willingness for active participation in the workshop to make the two-day experience en-joy-able.
