Determinants of health include the range of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health status. Policymaking, social factors, health services, individual behavior, and biology/genetics are broad factors that impact both individual and population health. Healthy People 2020 emphasizes an ecological approach to disease prevention and health promotion, which focuses on both individual-level and population-level determinants of health and interventions. This presentation illustrates the concept of health determinants, offers examples of interventions that address determinants of health, and discusses how Healthy People 2020 is exploring these factors.
