Disparities in mental health in the United States and beyond its borders occur in the context of globalizing forces. Research conducted in these contexts must extend the gaze of investigators so that they are inclusive of vulnerable populations in the formulation of research questions. This approach ensures that the economic, political and sociocultural diversity in which humans live informs our understanding of the development, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. This presentation describes the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) framework for research action to reduce local and global mental health disparities.

Learning Areas:
Diversity and culture
Public health or related research

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the presentation participants will be able to: Define “mental health equity” and “mental health disparity”. Give examples of the effects of globalization on people with mental illness. Describe a process for developing a research strategy to address disparities. Describe key initiatives at the NIMH.
