Dental Education Perspective
Monday, October 31, 2011: 4:50 PM
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as the ACA, was signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010. The Act contains more than two dozen provisions that relate to oral health and health professions education. This presentation will address six of these provisions that directly impact the dental education community, and the prospects for their actual implementation given the current political and economic environment. These provisions include: insurance plans will be required to include pediatric oral health services for children up to 21 years of age; pediatric oral health services are named as an essential health benefit; a new dental section is established within Title VII for training in general, pediatric, and public health dentistry; Graduate Medical Education (GME) rules affecting dental residencies are modified; a National Health Care Workforce Commission is established; and, Title VII diversity programs are reauthorized. None of the ACA's goals can be realized unless Congress appropriates adequate funds.
