Monday, October 31, 2011: 10:55 AM
Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Belgaum, India is a research site of the NICHD Global Network for Women's and Children's Health Research (GN) from 2001. Partnering with Christiana Care Health Systems, DE, USA, the international multi-disciplinary research team of clinicians, basic scientists, public health experts, and information technology specialists has implemented community based research for improving maternal, neonatal, infant and early childhood health and survival in low resource settings. Building on expanded research capacity emanating from GN participation, JNMC has forged collaborations with other US Universities and not-for-profit organizations and conducted research with support of other NIH agencies, World Health Organization, American Academy of Pediatrics, International Atomic Energy Agency and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The research areas relate to: Postpartum Hemorrhage; Active Management of Third Stage Labor; Skilled Birth Attendance; home-to-hospital continuum of Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care; factors influencing adverse pregnancy outcomes; cervical cancer; management of birth asphyxia; infant nutrition; and early home based education for promoting optimal childhood growth and development. The site has pioneered a population based registry for tracking maternal and newborn health outcomes. The focus is to develop sustainable service delivery models for informing policy that could be scaled up programmatically by countries to meet MDGs 4 and 5.
