This presentation will describe recent English policy initiatives to promote healthy communities, and examine their theoretical frameworks, use of evidence and local experience about “what works”. It will also consider the potential improvements and possible pitfalls associated with the proposed new public health system for England, which will give a more central role to local councils and introduce a greater emphasis on the wider determinants of health, health-supporting behaviours and the lifecourse.
Learning Objectives: Demonstrate and describe the recent community health improvement initiatives in England.
Discuss some of the key issues related to evaluating their success.
