Workforce development in public health is one of the key challenges facing the field today. This presentation will focus on workforce training and continuing education on management topics delivered through internet based platforms. Brief discussion will be given to the current body of knowledge on this approach and present a rationale for the expanded use of this medium for reaching working public health practitioners. Greater detail will be given to the prominent vehicles currently available including those delivered by the CDC, APHA, NACCHO, Public Health Training Centers, the Public Health Foundation and the Public Health Finance & Management Connection, outlining what types of content are available and when possible giving indications of the current usage levels of this format.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I am qualified to give this presentation due to having spent 20 years training the workforce and delivering managerial consulting services for healthcare providers around the nation. Over the last two years I have been involved in an extensive review conducted by experts around the country on the needs of the public health management workforce particularly in the area of finance and operations. My role as a member of the team that began developing a web based training portal for public health finance in 2009 provides significant experience in the content area for this presentation. As a member of APHA’s Education Board I have knowledge of the broader contextual factors that influence how distance continuing education fits into the larger public health workforce development agenda.
