With funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services subcontracted with the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health to create the Health Policy Development Academy. This new nine-month training initiative is designed to increase the capacity of Nebraska's public health professionals to use policy and law as tools to advance health policies that promote the public's health and well-being. The Academy is a team based approach designed for public health practitioners in state and local government and their essential partners. This presentation will focus on the development and early implementation of the Academy.

Learning Objectives:
1) Describe how the Nebraska Health Policy Development Academy will increase local policy capacity 2) Explain the significance of policy capacity within state and local health departments 3) Discuss early lessons learned during the initial planning period of the Health Policy Development Academy 4) Explain the importance of using a collaborative training approach for building capacity in local public health departments
